Color and Character: The New Jewelry Wardrobe 2026-27

September is the start of the year for the fashion world!! And for jewelry retailers, the fashion seasons ahead point to encouraging news. Consumers are not abandoning jewelry for minimalism they are just becoming more selective about how jewelry expresses their personality.

Across the Fall/Winter 2026-2027 and Spring 2027 runways, designers are balancing refined, wearable pieces with bold color, sculptural forms, nostalgia and renewed interest in craftsmanship. For a jewelry store, this creates opportunities to merchandise both sides of the equation – everyday pieces with a fashion-forward twist and statement jewelry that gives customers something to talk about.

The Story for Fall: Boldness with a Personal Story: The Fall/Winter 2026-27 fashion palette is particularly interesting for retailers who showcase colored gemstones across their categories. Pantone describes the season as a balance between “restrained opulence and modernity,” pairing grounded, familiar colors with more daring shades. The standout Pantone colors are: Muted Clay, Neptune Green, Acacia, All Aboard Blue, and Burnt Olive, supported by neutrals such as Warm Cream, Toffee Brown, Gray and Poseidon Blue.

Translated into the gemstone palette, these can equate to gems such as Green Tourmaline, Teal Sapphires, Blue Zircon, Aquamarine, Citrine, Golden Beryl, Spessartite Garnet and Warmer Tones of Spinel as well as the continual appeal of Sapphire in colors from ocean blue to deep midnight. The neutral shades suggest opportunities for Smoky Quartz, Champagne and Brown Diamonds, as well as some shades of Zircon and Spinel, while the richer greens can give Tsavorite, Peridot, Tourmaline and Emerald renewed relevance.

Adam Bassalali, co-founder and vice president of Lali Jewels, comments. “As consumers increasingly seek unique, expressive fine jewelry, colored gemstones continue to experience a remarkable rise in popularity. For us, Montana teal sapphires have emerged as a standout favorite, captivating buyers with their mesmerizing blend of ocean blue and forest green hues. They perfectly align with the growing desire for individualized, nature-inspired jewelry.”

The fashion message is not simply “more jewelry”, but “jewelry with a presence”. Industry observers and stylists have been forecasting a move away from endless layering toward fewer, more substantial pieces that include large sculptural earrings, substantial rings, bold pendants and necklaces that stand on their own. Further, London Fashion Week offered other clues on the importance of brooches, jeweled collars, pearls and hair jewelry. All were prominent on the Fall/Winter 2026 runways and red carpets. Brooches should be particularly interesting for retailers because they can be targeted toward both men and women as both legacy jewelry and current fashion accessory.

Pearls definitely deserve attention this season. Rather than appearing strictly classic, they’re being styled with an attitude of individuality and deliberately imperfect! Baroque shapes, unusual colors. mixed metals and interesting pearl combinations are expanding the category beyond traditional to contemporary and fun.

“Pearls have always been a popular classic choice, but over the past decade they’ve been gaining popularity in more fashion-forward styling – and colors,” says Ray Mastoloni, partner at Mastoloni. “Sports players and celebrities are showing just how easy it is to wear pearls every day, or to pop an outfit with fun pearl pieces. It’s very exciting because it gives retailers entire new markets to target with their pearl assortments.”

Retailers should not overlook charms and personal jewelry! Charm jewelry continues to benefit from the broader consumer desire for pieces to tell a story or mark an important memory. That suggests that retailers might merchandise charms alongside colored gemstones and personalized components, rather than treating them as a separate category.

“The strongest jewelry doesn’t simply accessorize”, says Eric Lux, president of Rembrandt Charms. “It tells a story. Charms give consumers the ability to build something entirely their own, one piece at a time, celebrating elements that define their lives. For retailers, that connection creates something equally powerful: a customer who has a reason to return again and again as their story continues.”

From a metal perspective, yellow gold still remains highly relevant, particularly when paired with gemstones and retro designs. But white metals, silver, and mixed metal styling have fashions momentum behind them. This can provide opportunities to speak to customers about layering and mixing colors and finishes, rather than simply a “gold versus silver” conversation.

The Story for Spring: Optimism, Nature and Escape: If Fall/Winter is about richness and personality, Spring/Summer 2027 turns up the optimism. Pantone’s overarching concept for the season is “Escape: Opening the Door to a New World”, reflecting a desire for harmony, empathy and positive transformation. The forecast moves between the depths of the sea and the expansiveness of the universe, organic and artificial, stillness and energy.

That philosophy translates beautifully into jewelry, and retailers should anticipate interest in aquatic blues and greens, luminous yellow, mint, coral and tomato red, as well as soft neutrals with bright tropical accents. These shades connect natural with gems such as Aquamarine, Blue and Green Tourmaline, Turquoise, Chrysoprase, Peridot, Citrine, Ruby, Spinel and Sapphire.

Fashion reporting for the season also points to a return of romance, craftsmanship and expressive color, with palettes reminiscent of lemon sorbet, apricot and bougainvillea. Meanwhile, accessory forecasting emphasizes natural materials, raw textures, combinations of organic elements with metallic details, all underscored by sustainability.

For jewelry, expect larger beads, organic shapes, textured metals and nature-inspired motifs. Pearls and charms will continue their upward trend. Earrings should be a particularly strong category. Spring 2027 menswear collections from Prada, Lous Vuitton, Celine and Ralph Lauren are showing statement hoops, suggesting that expressive earrings are becoming increasingly popular across gender lines.

The Retail Opportunity: The real big takeaways for the upcoming fashion seasons are that color is becoming a powerful merchandising tool. This might point to a reassessment of visual merchandising. Rather than organizing pieces by gemstone or price point, a retailer might consider creating small seasonal stories around themes such as: Deep Ocean, Earth & Ember, Garden Green, Sunlit Yellow, or The Modern Heirloom.

The strongest collections will likely combine fashion awareness and emotional relevance. Customers want jewelry that feels current, but they also want jewelry that feels like them, mirroring their self-appraisal and their beliefs. Proper merchandise and creative visuals can position product as delivering both. After all, jewelry is the finishing touch that transforms an outfit. In the seasons ahead, personality is the trend, color is the language, and individuality is the luxury.
