As consumers increasingly respond to sustainability claims, eco-friendly products and environmentally focused concepts, what can a retailer legally advertise and verbally say to ensure the language is neither misleading nor deceiving? The FTC has an entire set of guidelines on how to talk about everything from solar powered to recycled materials! However, these guides are up for revision and the acceptable language is changing quickly. Retailers need to be prepared and stay informed.

Sara Yood, from the Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC), provided attendees with insights on what these guidelines say, and what might be changing, to help retailers ensure the words they use in describing and advertising their products clearly communicate their values to the consumer, while safeguarding the store’s reputation.
